An experienced investor and financial executive, Arthur “Art” J Samberg is a graduate of MIT, Stanford University and Columbia Business School who currently serves as the principal and owner of Hawkes Financial LLC, his family office. Art Samberg was recently featured in an AeraAstro article, "A Conversation with AeroAstro Alumnus Arthur Samberg," in which he discussed his professional work and his nonprofit engagement at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The New York Presbyterian Hospital is a medical institution that was founded through the merger of the New York Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital in 1998. Currently, the hospital operates four divisions: physician services, community health, a regional hospital network and the New York Presbyterian Hospital itself. The hospital receives over two million visits each year, many of which are charity care cases.

Charity care is a form of financial assistance provided to patients that visit the hospital who are in need of financial aid. The program ensures eligible patients with insurance are not billed more than general amounts, and that patients without insurance are not billed more than the hospital's gross charges. In addition, flexible installment payment plans are available to patients who qualify for charity care. For income requirements and other program information, visit www.nyp.org/about-us/charity-care.

Guiding Underprivileged Students in Their Quest to Attend College

The owner of Hawkes Financial LLC, a family office based in New York, Arthur (Art) J. Samberg oversees the firm’s venture capital financing operations. Conscious of the needs of the community around him, Art Samberg has served as a board member of the Children’s Hospital of New York and Peer Forward.

By 2020, more than 60 percent of all jobs will demand higher education. In fact, 99 percent of all jobs created after the 2008 recession require some form of post-secondary education. However, only 10 percent of students from underprivileged communities graduate college by age 25. Counseling high school students can change this.

Recognizing the acute shortage of counselors for high school students in the United States, Peer Forward was established to train and empower small groups of influential peers in underserved communities who would then guide classmates toward their goal of attending college. To date, the organization has placed more than 250,000 students on the path to college success. Two of these students are Dasha Good and Kion Douglas.

Ms. Good is the first person in her family to attend college. She graduated from Ballou Senior High School in Washington, D.C., and was admitted to Old Dominion University.

Mr. Douglas graduated from Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. After donating 324 community service hours and serving as a student representative, he earned a scholarship to attend Norfolk State University.

Arthur “Art” J. Samberg is a financial entrepreneur and executive with over three decades of experience in the industry, after twenty years on Wall Street tracking technology stocks. Art Samberg is the owner of Hawkes Financial LLC, his family office, in New York, which he founded following a successful tenure as owner of Pequot Capital Management, Inc. Also a philanthropist, Mr. Samberg recently gave $25 million to Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital to create the Scholars Program.

Located in New York City, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is a prestigious children's medical center that was rated one of the best children's hospitals in 2017 by US News and World Report. The hospital, which provides care in every area of pediatrics, is able to draw on the Scholars Program to recruit talented professionals in pediatric medicine.

The Scholars Program provides funding which is awarded to physicians who are pediatricians or who specialize in a similar field of medicine. Known as Samberg scholars, these physicians can then utilize the funding to recruit nurses or fellows and conduct research. The funding is competitive, and applicants must demonstrate excellence in leadership, community commitment, teaching, and program development in addition to pediatric care.
