Known for being a prominent Wall Street hedge fund manager and CEO for more than 23 years, Art Samberg has given generously to a variety of charities and foundations. Also sitting on the boards of several organizations, Art Samberg was honored for his contributions to the UJA Federation of NY at a recent fundraising dinner.

The UJA Federation of NY seeks to serve and strengthen the Jewish community as well as inspire enthusiasm for learning about Jewish culture and history. More than four million people in 70 countries are touched by the organization each year, according to its website.

Examples of the federation’s community service initiatives include providing access to critical human services to the elderly, the poor, and Holocaust survivors, as well as children and adults with special needs. The organization also devotes its resources to spreading and preserving Jewish values and increasing access to Jewish educational opportunities.                            

A well-known hedge fund manager and the current head of his family office, Hawkes Financial LLC, Arthur J. Samberg supports numerous community causes. In 2012, Art Samberg and his wife, Rebecca Samberg, created a scholarship program at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital with a gift of $25 million.

Designed to recruit and support high-caliber physicians, fellows, and nurses with specializations in pediatrics, the Samberg Scholars in Children’s Health program started in January 2013 with the appointment of 10 physicians to the Children’s Hospital. The hospital plans to increase the number of scholars to as many as 40 over the next five years, thanks to the size of the Sambergs’ gift.

Candidates for the Samberg Scholar program must meet a number of requirements. In addition to exhibiting leadership and skill in teaching and program development, they should be general pediatricians or pediatric subspecialists. The first 10 Samberg Scholars came from backgrounds in rehabilitation medicine, orthopedic surgery, and nephrology, as well as pediatrics.

Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, a part of New York Presbyterian, ranks among the top children’s hospitals in the country.

In June 2013, MBA graduate (class of 1967) Art Samberg pledged to donate $25 million to Columbia Business School to assist with the construction of a brand new campus in Manhattanville. The dean of Columbia Business School accepted the pledge from Arthur Samberg together with a further $15 million donation from 1967 graduate Mario J. Gabelli. Just one month earlier, Columbia Business School accepted an additional $100 million donation.

The design of the school’s Manhattanville campus will be carried out by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, a prominent New York architectural firm, together with FXFOWLE. The design is expected to fulfil the demands for a fast-paced business environment in the 21st century, with cutting-edge technology and innovation at the forefront.

This is not the first offer of financial assistance from Art J. Samberg; in 2002, he donated $10 million to Columbia Business School, a sum that was used to establish the Arthur J. Samburg Institute for Teaching Excellence. Additionally, Mr. Samberg offered a further $25 million to the school in 2006.
