The members of the MIT Corporation are comprised of people who are notable leaders in the fields of engineering, education, science, and public service. Only 25 individuals can serve as life members at a time. Upon their 75th birthday, life members can transfer their membership to that of life member emeritus. While life members who participate as emeriti can attend meetings, they no longer have voting privileges.
Virtually all the trustees that serve on the board are MIT graduates. However, graduation from the schools is not a requirement. Other criteria used in the selection process include geographical representation and professional standing and reputation. The MIT Corporation requires that members show a high level of commitment and continued participation in the activities of the school.
